Australian War Memorial Commemorative Crosses Project

Lance Corporal Sylvester Sydney Day

Earlier this year, our school leaders wrote a message of thanks on a small wooden commemorative cross which was placed on the memorial site of Lance Corporal Sylvester Sydney Day at Lone Pine, Gallipoli.

On Tuesday 28 April, Rhiannon Hasset of Wavell State High School (one of the recipients of the Premier's ANZAC Prize 2015) proudly laid Isabella State School's cross on the gravesite of Sylvester Sydney Day.

It was a solemn and moving experience -  made even more personal by the fact that Lance Corporal Sylvester Sydney Day was Rhiannon's great, great, great Uncle.  Lance Corporal Day's fateful time came on the night of 2 May 1915 when his Battalion attacked a hill close to Quinn's Post.  It was on this night, through continual firing, that he was killed in action by a sniper.

We are very proud to have been given the opportunity to express our appreciation of the sacrifice of the ANZACS so that we can enjoy our Australian lifestyle and freedom.
