Curriculum:

Across many of our subject areas this term we will see students focusing on local and global environmental issues.

  • In English, our focus will be on comparing a novel and film and the underlying issues of the environment as we look at ‘Storm Boy.’  Students will continue to participate in reading activities, Spelling Mastery lessons as well as grammar, punctuation, editing and writing classes.
  • In Mathematics, students will focus on 24 hour time, factors and multiples and chance and probability as well as daily maths mentals and EMMs to support number facts and application.
  • In Science, students will investigate animal adaptations.
  • In HASS, students will be examining the democratic process and applying this to the school setting taking on an environmental focus and considering school leadership for 2020.
  • Your child will be participating in one hour lesson of LOTE (Languages Other Than English) each week. The language studied is Chinese.
  • Students participate in Music and PE Lessons on Thursdays.  Please ensure they have their hat and water bottle for every lesson to be invited to the end of term PE celebration.  Students require this equipment every day and especially on PE days.

With our reef visit coming up at the end of the term, students will continue to discuss the requirements of this trip.  More information will be sent home throughout the term.  At this stage it is important to consider the financial cost of this trip.  Including our fundraising efforts and the support of the P and C, this trip will cost students around $60.  If you haven’t already started a payment plan through the office, this might be a good idea as it helps cover the cost of this trip and any other expenses throughout the year.  It is also a helpful approach to pay for Year 6 camp in 2020.

Another suggestion is for students to start to practice wearing a snorkel and flippers when they go swimming.  Reef Magic makes this suggestion as students feel more comfortable in the water when they go to the reef if they have had experience with this equipment.  The reef trip will be our culminating Year 5 activity bringing together many aspects of the work students will cover throughout Term 4.  It will also be an important experience as a local and global citizen.

The student election process will begin in Week 5.  This forms part of student’s studies in HASS and students will be given information and timelines closer to the dates they will need to prepare for this process.  This will be each student’s responsibility to be prepared and get involved.

If you have queries or questions throughout the term, feel free to make contact with your child’s classroom teacher before or after school. Teachers are also contactable via email with addresses provided below.

We really look forward to working together with you this term to make sure your child can achieve their full potential.  We are looking forward to a great term.
